Embracing the philosophy of the Dao De Jing One of the things that make human life intriguing and to some extent captivating is the diversity and variation exhibited by various people as a result of their differing cultures and personalities amongst other things. Different people have different beliefs and value systems and I have always been of the opinion that a lot can be learnt from the diverse practices. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Embracing the philosophy of the Dao De Jing specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Through the years, I have had the opportunity to be exposed to various value systems, religions and philosophies. While most of these have only aroused vague curiosity in me, there are those philosophies that I have found appealing and would consider incorporating in my life. The naturalistic philosophy of the Dao De Jing which is a compilation of texts on the Chinese way of thinking also referred to as Taoism is one of the philosophies which I c onsider adopting. In this paper, I shall review the impact on my values and practices that embracing Taoism shall have on my life. I shall also discuss how this decision will affect my daily living. Having being born and raised in Italy, I have a deep-rooted love and passion for music, painting, and various other artistic works. This deep appreciation has been as a result of experiencing my childhood years in Italy, a country that places much value and appreciation for fine arts. My personal life therefore bears witness to this as can be illustrated by the various ornaments that I adorn and the painting and sculptures that I have in my house. While some of my ornaments are only of sentimental value to me and hold no significant monetary value to speak of, others have a high monetary value and wearing them is more of a status symbol. The Dao De Jing philosophy explicitly asserts that one shall not display objects of desire as this might lead to the disturbance of the hearts of other people (140). For me to embrace these teachings, I shall therefore have to be in sync with the Taoism value of non-materialism which seeks to create a world whereby the jealousy that is inherent in human beings is not evoked. I shall therefore have to rid myself of my art works which I greatly cherish. This will lead to harmony as vices such as theft which spring from coveting will be evaded. In the course of my life, I have had the privilege of residing in a number of countries and interacted with people of various cultures. From this, I have honed my ability as a multilingual and at present, I work at a hospital as a medical interpreter. Most people view me with fascination and are astounded by my various achievements in life. Advertising Looking for essay on philosophy? Let's see if we can help you! Accor ding to the Taoist philosophy, one should accomplish his task but not claim credit for it (140). If I am to adopt the practices of Taoism, I shall have to stop taking credit for my accomplishments but rather be content with letting the accomplishments remain in me. We live in a capitalistic world where emphasis is placed on being a notch above the rest. As such, competition is not only encouraged but also greatly rewarded in most of our institutes. Like many other westerners, I am therefore competitive as a factor of nurture. This attribute in me can be perfectly illustrated by my college experience where I have always aimed to achieve the best results. In most of my educational efforts, I work as an individual so as to give myself an edge over the rest of the students. Taoism asserts that the best man is like water and he benefits all things and doesnt compete with them (143). As such, Taoism would have me not only love humanity but also work in harmony with other human beings. Wh ile I am not outspoken about all things in life, I hold a strong opinion on the issues that I deem to be significant in my life such as art, language and my beliefs. I am outspoken about my ambitions in life and do not shy from sharing them with others. Taoism calls on its faithful to exercise subtlety in all undertaking. If I am to follow the path of Tao, I will be inclined to exercise discretion in my affairs and keep my ambitions and beliefs to myself. By practicing subtlety which is characterized by a hidden manifestation of affairs, I will master of things of the present and draw closer to the universe as well (146). One of the less than pleasant experiences in my life is my recent divorce from my spouse. Owing to this event, the last couple of months have been especially turbulent for me as I have sought to regain my emotional balance. I have experienced various emotions from rage and anger to relief and ecstasy. In my moments of anger, I have viewed by former partner unfavor ably and wished malevolent things upon his life. The philosophy of the Dao De Jing calls on us to be impartial (141). As such, for me to embrace Taoism, I should learn how to regard all human beings and especially my ex-husband without any loathing. In addition to this, I should learn how to not give too much though to any of the events that happen in my life but rather aim for tranquility and inner peace. This will call for me to have the will power to let go of all the past troubles and face the future with hope.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Embracing the philosophy of the Dao De Jing specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More While my relationship with others is not marred by suspicions or great troubles, I concede that it is not as good as I would desire. This may be because of my candid nature which may at times be mistaken for insensitivity. Taoism presents a way for me to mend my relationship with others. Accordin g to these teachings, one can buy honor by fine words and gain the respect of others by fine deeds (168). Considering that my personal and indeed my professional life is characterized by numerous instances of interactions with other people, this philosophy would be very beneficial to me since people tend to be more amicable if there is some degree of honor and respect involved in the relationship. Through the years, I have been enrolled in various educational institutes at various levels. This has been in a bid to increase my knowledge and therefore make me a better and more productive member of the society. While it is impossible to possess all the knowledge that is there, I have discovered through experience that sometimes people regard you with more respect if they perceive that you know more than you in reality do know. For this reason, I sometimes create the false impression of knowing more than I do. Taoism strongly suggests that such behavior is a disease and that one should be content with knowing that you do not know (172). I suspect that the reason for this Tao stance concerning this matter is because if people think that you know something, they will not take the trouble to educate you on the issue and this may be detrimental especially to me as a student. My adoption of Taoism would therefore require that I have no shame in my ignorance but rather see it as an opportunity to increase my knowledge. It has always been my belief that it is a moral and right thing to assist the less privileged members of our society. For this reason, I am involved in various charitable organizations and constantly offer my assistance to charitable causes. This is a practice that is also held in high esteem by Taoism. The philosophy acclaims the person who gives to others as virtuous and further goes on to state that the more he gives to others the more he possesses of his own (176). However, Taoism goes on to state that a wise person does not accumulate wealth for t hemselves. This is something that I am guilty of as I have over the years aimed at saving up for my future. Embracing the philosophy would therefore require of me to use more of my resources for others so that I can have more for myself and subsequently live a fulfilling life.Advertising Looking for essay on philosophy? To this end, I have discussed my various values and practices and the significant changes that I would have to make so as to conform to the Tao standards. Without doubt, some of these changes are monumental and it would take me many years to change from my current practices. This is mostly because some of these ideologies such as capitalism are deeply entrenched in me owing to my upbringing. However, I strongly believe that if I remained strong willed and express a genuine desire to follow the Taoist philosophy; I shall find my way and lead a tranquil and fulfilling life as the Taoism promises itââ¬â¢s faithful. Electronic Evolution in Negotiability of Negotiable Instruments - Essay Example Throughout the legislative process, attention was constantly given to the areas like, Governments, banks, trading and other interested circles. The Convention applies only to international bills of exchange and international promissory notes when they comply with certain requisites of form. The use of an instrument governed by the Convention is thus entirely optional. Ratification or accession by a State does not subject all international instruments issued in that State to the legal regime of the Convention but merely opens the door for bankers and merchants to opt for this new legal regime if they deem it preferable in their professional judgment.(1) The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Model Law on Electronic Commerce 1996 (2)is a set of rules that provides a model for reform in this context. It is recommended that the Model Law should be adopted to increase certainty in relation to the enforceability of electronic bills of exchange. A bill of exchange is a written instrument which contains an unconditional order whereby the drawer directs the drawee to pay a definite sum of money to the payee or to his order, on demand or at a definite time. It should be dated and it should be signed by the drawer. A promissory note is a written instrument which contains an unconditional promise whereby the maker undertakes to pay a definite sum of money to the payee or to his order; on demand or at a definite time and it should be dated and it should be signed by the maker.(3) Modern commercial practice has been influenced to a considerable degree during the years by electronics and computers in numerous ways. With all scientific developments within the business environment the pace of adjustment corresponds to a challenge to the traditional legal notions regulating patterns of trade. The Workplace Challenge Essay Unit 5 serves students ages 14-21. The program matches suitable jobs for every adolescent through evaluation of their interests and developing skills for future jobs. (Shafallah 2007) Aside from these major programs, the school also offers clinical and therapeutic services as well as school health and nutrition oversights. The Students The population of students in Shafallah is 426 who are between ages three to twenty-one years. The students are with mild, moderate, and severe learning challenges. These are children, adolescents, and young adults with Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy accompanied by intellectual or developmental disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders and they make up the majority of our student population. Class size ratio of teachers to students is 1:3 in all school programs except the Autism Unit, where the ratio is 1:2. The Teachers There are currently 125 employed by the school. These are all professionals with varied expertise. Due to the limited professionals who have specific expertise in the fields needed by the school, many, about 25% of the teaching force are foreign nationals from the United States, Canada and other European countries, to serve for at least two (2) years in the school. The remaining 75% are from the different provinces in Qatar. All teachers in the academic unit are degree holders, mostly with masters and doctorate diploma with corresponding licenses in the fields of education, medicine and psychology. The age range is wide, from 25 years to 60. This includes teachers who are at the same time in the management level. The Management Policies and legislations in the school are made by the school board headed by Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Bin Abdullah Al-Missned, the Chairperson of the Supreme Council of Family Affairs. The executive functions are performed by the management team composed of 20 experienced professionals organized in the form of a Management Committee. The head is the Managing Director who is from the United States, followed by an Assistant Managing Director who is from Qatar. 75% or majority of the members of the ManCom are foreign nationals while 25% are from Qatar. The academic and service units are fully manned with leaders but it is noticeable though that in the backhouse, the school has not installed a department that will handle the concerns of human resource or a human resource department. In its absence, the public relations department handles the processing of teachers and other admin staff recruitment. On the surface, observing the transactions in the offices and the other facilities, the movements in the school campus, the school was seemingly operating normally. But as we dig deeper, we would find some areas of major concerns which should be cause for immediate and decisive actions by the school. The school has been experiencing high turnover of teachers for the past two years. Because resignations were frequent, recruitment which is done regularly by the Public Relations Department. The massive tasks in recruitment have eaten up much of the time of the PR staff, so that major functions of the department are de-prioritized. The ManCom with its American Managing Director concentrated on sourcing funds to augment to the schools facilities. The proceeds from the studentsââ¬â¢ tuition were not sufficient to finance the expansion programs and the upgrading of facilities of the school. The ManCom had to source for international funding agencies for additional support including the schools benefactor and strong advocate, Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Bin Abdullah Al-Missned, the Chairperson of the Supreme Council of Family Affairs, who is also the Chairperson of the school board. In the first quarter of 2007, the ManComââ¬â¢s attention was called by the school board to solve complaints by the parents and the community about the declining quality of services provided by the school. This resulted to the ManComââ¬â¢s creation of an adhoc committee to investigate the facts, study the causes of the problems and recommend solutions to the findings. The adhoc committee reported the major findings of their investigation. The complaints of the parents and the community were due to overcrowding of students in classes, where instead of 1:3 ratio, there were 10 students already being handled by each teacher. This was due to the lack of teachers handling specific subjects.

Co-author of ââ¬Å"They Say/I Sayâ⬠handbook, Gerald Graff, analyzes in his essay ââ¬Å"Hidden Intellectualismâ⬠that ââ¬Å"street smartsâ⬠can be used for more efficient learning and can be a valuable tool to train students to ââ¬Å"get hooked on reading and writingâ⬠(Graff 204). Graffââ¬â¢s purpose is to portray to his audience that knowing more about cars, TV, fashion, and etc. than ââ¬Å"academic workâ⬠is not the detriment to the learning process that colleges and schools can see it to be (198). This knowledge can be an important teaching assistant and can facilitate the grasping of new concepts and help to prepare students to expand their interests and write with better quality in the future. Graff clarifies his reasoning by indicating, ââ¬Å"Give me the student anytime who writes a sharply argued, sociologically acute analysis of an issue in Source over the student who writes a life-less explication of Hamlet or Socratesââ¬â¢ Apologyâ⬠(205). Graff adopts a jovial tone to lure in his readers and describe how this overlooked intelligence can spark a passion in students to become interested in formal and academic topics. He uses ethos, pathos, and logos to establish his credibility, appeal emotionally to his readers, and appeal to logic by makes claims, providing evidence, and backing his statements up with reasoning. In the first sentences of this essay, it is easy to relate to Graffââ¬â¢s words. Immediately, he engages readers in the topic and begins to establish his pathos. By using the phrase ââ¬Å"Everyone knows some young personâ⬠, Graff relates to a common identity and appeals to his readers emotions. This broad generalization expands the authorââ¬â¢s audience by automatically including all of his readers. It is Graffââ¬â¢s opinion that ââ¬Å"schools and colleges might be at fau... ...ting them choose their own groups to be in during class, as offering multiple ways to complete projects, different assigned reading topics, and etc. The student can only get out of the class as much as they put in. Even though the students may wish the teachers would give less homework or let them read Sports Illustrated in class, there is a fine line between academic learning that incorporates ââ¬Å"street smartsâ⬠and academic learning that lacks on the academic part. Teachers must insure their students are learning the required material and that they are not taking detours from learning about topics and ideas that students need to be successful after college. In the novel Enderââ¬â¢s game, Orson Scott Card attempts to convey the message of the conflict between compassion and ruthlessness. For one thing Ender often compares himself to his ruthless brother Peter every time he himself does something mean and cold hearted. But Ender also has a compassionate personality. he shows his compassionate personality in many cases. He also shows that Ender may have a bit of a ruthlessness in him, but resents himself for it. He then also shows that compassion beats ruthlessness when Enders overtops ruthless Peter in almost everything they do. Therefore Orson used the theme compassionate vs. ruthlessness by exhibiting Enderââ¬â¢s success and Peterââ¬â¢s failures to exhibit the theme compassion vs. ruthlessness. Peter has more of an influence in Enderââ¬â¢s life then he realized, He even acknowledges it one point when thanks Peter in his mind for teaching him how to hide his feelings. Often Ender compares himself to Peter especially when he ends up hurting or killing something or someone. After he beats up Stilson. He thinks that heââ¬â¢s like Peter. ââ¬Å"Ender leaned against the wall of the corridor and cried until the bus came. ââ¬ËI am just like Peter. Take my monitor away and Iââ¬â¢m just like Peter. ââ¬Ëâ⬠(page 8) Ender realizes with anguish that heââ¬â¢s turning into Peter. He finds this really sad. Another time he feels like Peter is when is when heââ¬â¢s flying to battle school. On the way there, a boy kept harassing him. Ender then proceeds to harm the boy and break his arm. ââ¬Å"Just as the next blow was coming, Ender reached up with both hands, snatched the boy by the wrist, and pulled down on the arm, hardâ⬠¦ I am Peter. I am just like him. And Ender hated himself. â⬠(page 122) Ender, even though he was defending himself, broke a kidââ¬â¢s hand and compared himself to Peter. He also hated himself for it. At one point, after Ender seeââ¬â¢s a reflection of Peter staring at him on a mirror in a reality game that shows your perspective of reality, the teacherââ¬â¢s acknowledge it. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËBut why. His brother is dangerous, his bother was rejected for the program because heââ¬â¢s one of the most ruthless human beings we ever laid hand on. Why is he so important to Ender? why after all this time? ââ¬Ëâ⬠(page 122) Peter is clearly important to Ender because Ender always keeps comparing himself to him, bares such a resemblance, and resents Peter, and himself. In conclusion Peter had a major influence in Enderââ¬â¢s life, in a sense of a bad role model, in Enderââ¬â¢s mind. Ender, all though often comparing himself to ruthless Peter, was actually very compassionate in many senses. When fellow student, and victim Shen is being bullied by Bernard, Ender interferes. Ender makes Bernard look stupid by sending stupid messages in Bernardââ¬â¢s name to make Bernard look stupid and make Shen happy â⬠Cover your butt. Bernard is watching -God. Bernard went red with anger. ââ¬Ë Who did this! ââ¬Ë he shouted ââ¬ËGod, ââ¬Ë said Shen. (page 50) Ender shows compassion by making Shen have a little bit of a victory, and making Bernard look plain stupid. Also, at one point Ender, when Bonzo and Ender are having an argument, Ender shows some kindness. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËBut if you want, Iââ¬â¢ll pretend that you won this argument. Then tomorrow you can tell me you changed your mindââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËI donââ¬â¢t need you to tell me what to do. ââ¬Ë ââ¬ËI just donââ¬â¢t want the other guys to think you backed down. Then tomorrow you can tell me you changed your mind. ââ¬Ë Bonzo hated him for it, for the kindness. Ender tried to understand why. â⬠(page 87) Ender shows kindness, even to Bonzo who his giving him a hard time. He makes sure that Ender wins the argument yet making Bonzo not look foolish in front of his boys. This shows many characteristics including kindness, compassionate, and also leniency. Also Ender shows compassion when he continued to train with the launchies (basically a group of kids that are new to the battle school. Ender was one of them but Ender quickly advanced ahead of his class. ) ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËNow your really in an army. ââ¬Ë said Alai ââ¬ËYou donââ¬â¢t need have to keep practicing with us. ââ¬Ë ââ¬ËFrom you I can learn things nobody knows,ââ¬â¢ said Ender ââ¬ËDink Meekr is the best. I hear heââ¬â¢s your toon leader. ââ¬Ë ââ¬Ë Then letââ¬â¢s get busy. Iââ¬â¢ll teach you from what I learnt today. ââ¬Ëâ⬠(page 103) Even when Ender is finally part of an army that actually uses him, he is still trained with the launchies, his former friends. He did not forsake them and showed many attributes such as caring, compassion, and kindness. In conclusion even though Ender may have a bit of Peterââ¬â¢s influenced ruthlessness he is still very kind and compassionate. Compassion is shown to top ruthlessness when Ender succeeds in achieving in everything that Peter failed in. Ender is first more successful then Peter when he keeps his monitor longer then Peter. ââ¬Å"But Peter would not soothed. ââ¬ËLike us? He keeps the little sucker till heââ¬â¢s six years old. When did you lose yours? You were three. I lost mind before I was five. He almost made it, little bastard, little bugger. ââ¬Ëâ⬠(page 10) Ender kept his monitor longer then Peter. Peter noticed this and pretty much snapped at his brother. This shows that Peter was both mad and jealous. The second time when he overtops Peter is when Ender is invited personally to battle school by Colonel Graff ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËMy name is Graff Ender. Colonel Hyrum Graff. Iââ¬â¢m director of the primary training at the battle school in the Belt. Iââ¬â¢ve come to invite you to enter the school. ââ¬Ëâ⬠(page 19) The director of the battle school came himself to invite Ender to the battle school, which is a rare honour which most boys, including Peter always wanted; to go to battle school and learn how to fight the buggers. The final time when final major accomplishment is when he defeats the buggers. ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ë Ender, for the past few months you have been battle commander of our entire fleet. This was the third invasion. There was no games, the battles were real, and the only enemy you fought was the buggers. You won every battle and today you finally fought them at their home world, where the queen was, all the queens from all their colonies. They all were there and you destroyed them completely, Theyââ¬â¢ll never attack us again. You did it. You'â⬠( 296-297) Ender was able to defeat the buggers, and win a whole entire war single handily He achieved every boyââ¬â¢s dream, to beat the buggers and save mankind. In conclusion Ender prevailed over ruthless Peter, which made him more successful then Peter. In conclusion Orson exhibits the them Compassion vs Ruthlessness by exhibiting the success of Ender and the failure of Peter. He shows this by comparing Ender to Peter and making Ender hate himself for it. But also exhibiting Enderââ¬â¢s overwhelming compassion to his other students. He also shows this by most importantly compassionate Ender vs ruthless Peter and how Ender overtopped him in everything he (Peter) did. Ender succeeded in everything Peter wanted to do. Even if though you need ruthlessness to do something dreadful, if you have enough compassion, you win out in the end.
